Questions and AnswersCategory: Moitessier HATI don't know if AIS works
nicola.lunetti asked 4 years ago

Hello Rooco,
today I was able to test openplotter on rpi + hat2 on my boat. The test was aimed at verifying the functioning of the AIS. I connected the VHF antenna positioned at the masthead. The HAT LEDs do not detect errors, but the AIS LED remains on, the GPS LED flashes. From the MarineTraffic APP there must have been some nearby teachings with active transmission, but I didn’t detect anything. Is it possible that I have to activate / set the Openplotter / OpenCPN / HAT software? How could I test the system to make sure that, if there are boats, it receives them?
Thanks

Hello Nicola,
have you installed the driver for the HAT?
Which AIS antenna do you use?
Can you try to enable the AIS simulator of the HAT via OpenPlotter to test communication with the Pi?
Regards,
Thomas

Thank you for the quickness.
1: I installed the HAT drivers – 4.19.97_1.9.0
2: I use a generic antenna for VHF reception of the on-board radio (I don’t know the model)
3: I started the AIS simulator but I don’t know what to expect. Should I see what?

Update: 3 AIS simulator ok

Hi, are there any updates on the problem?
There is a software command to verify that everything works, beyond the signal reception capacity. I mean, if I have a boat very close to transmitting AIS, my device definitely receives it, provided that everything works.
Thanks

Hello Nicola,
the system performs a self test during booting. If the receiver is defective, an error will be indicated by the red LED. However, this self test cannot verify if it actually receives AIS targets. The simulator is only used to verify if the communication between HAT and Pi is working properly.
During manufacture we are doing a 100% functionality test, including physical AIS reception using real AIS targets to ensure the device is working properly.

Regards,
Thomas
