Questions and AnswersCategory: Moitessier HATgetting-gnss-gps-to-work
Trevor Miles asked 5 years ago

I did a clean install from NOOBS in order to update to OpenPlotter 1.2.x. After some fiddling around I managed to get the correct update for MOT. Noe=w the boot works wonderfully.
But I cannot get the GNSS/GPS to work.
To be honest I seem to remember that I had to do some Raspbian configuration 9 months ago when I first got the MOT in order to get the GPS to work. I had hoped that this would all work seamlessly now.
I followed the instructions at https://docs.sailoog.com/openplotter-v1-x-x/tools/moitessier-hat#configuring-gnss-and-ais-reception If there are more recent instructions I would really appreciate someone pointing me to them.
In OP if I assign the MOT to GPSD on the Serial tab, I get absolutely nothing out when I run the kplex diagnostic for GPSD. The screen is just blank.
If I assign the MOT to KPlex, with baud 4800, on the Serial tab, I get messages when I run the kplex diagnostic for MOT, but the GLL and GGA messages do not contain any lat/lot info. The lat/lon related messages are below.

  • Device Type Interval Data
  • GP        GLL    1.0     ,,,,,080724.085,V,N*
  • GP        GGA   1.0     ,080724.085,,,,,0,0,,,M,,M,,*

The temp and pressure sensors are working.
Any suggestions? Any pointers to configuration changes I need to make on Raspbian?

Trevor Miles replied 5 years ago

Out of desperation I installed a separate GPS USB puck and this works just fine, so it can only be something about the Moitessier HAT config.

Trevor Miles replied 5 years ago

I’d really appreciate some guidance on how to test the GNSS/GPS on the Moitessier HAT using Raspbian command.

Thomas Staff replied 5 years ago

Can you please execute the following command in a terminal. You should receive AIS and GNSS data.
cat /dev/moitessier.spi

Read also chapter 9.7 in the user guide.

Hi Thomas
I tested at home and everything seemed to be fine, so I took the RPi to my boat, and I got intermittent results, so I brought it home and did a complete reinstall from the 1.0.0 img of openplotter, updated the firmware, etc.
But I get 2 solid green lights indicating no GNSS and AIS. Both the GNSS puck and the RPi are sitting on a french window sill will lots of visible sky. When I run the test script I get no error flags.

When I run cat /dev/moitessier.tty I get the following message.

cat: /dev/moitessier.tty: Device or resource busy

I’d really appreciate some swift guidance.

I’ve include the boot log too in case that is helpful. I couldn’t see how to attache a file so I copied the text.

After all the effort, it appears that it may be the monitor that I have connected that is causing the problem. I had read that electrical sources may interfere with the GNSS, but I did not think of the monitor. But a quick test shows that if I have the monitor plugged into the RPi, even without the power turned on, the GNSS does not work. If I plug in another that has a longer HDMI cable, the GNSS works fine.
Any thoughts, suggestions? I can run it headless, but that was not my intent.

Hello Trevor,
this is quite strange and rare. However, this might occur if interference is too high. GPS is in general a very sensitive electronic part. Can you tell me which monitor and HDMI cable you are using? You can try to reduce interference by using cables with ferrite beads.

Regards,
Thomas
